MacBook Pro repair, 2016 to 2019 (Touch Bar models)
The 2016 to 2019 MacBook Pro brought USB-C, the Touch Bar and the butterfly keyboard. We repair every 13 and 15 inch model of this generation.
This generation charges over USB-C and has only Thunderbolt 3 ports. Most models have a Touch Bar; the two-port 13 inch models from 2016 and 2017 have ordinary function keys. From 2018 the Mac has Apple's T2 security chip, and on Touch Bar models the storage is part of the logic board.

The butterfly keyboard
The thin butterfly keyboard on these models is prone to keys that stick, repeat or stop working. The keyboard is riveted into the top case, which also carries the battery, so the reliable repair is to replace the whole top case assembly. That gives you a new keyboard and a new battery at the same time.
Backlight faults
On 2016 and 2017 models the thin cables that feed the display backlight can wear where they pass through the hinge. The first sign is an uneven, spotlight-like glow at the bottom of the screen, and later the backlight cuts out when the lid is opened wide. We can tell you whether the cable can be repaired or the display needs replacing.

Common questions
Is it worth replacing the keyboard on a 2017 MacBook Pro?
If the rest of the Mac is healthy, usually yes, particularly as the repair includes a new battery. We'll quote before you decide.
Can you recover my files if this Mac won't turn on?
On this generation the storage is part of the logic board and is encrypted by the Mac's own security chip, so it can't simply be removed and read. Getting the data back means repairing the logic board far enough to copy it off, which is exactly what our component-level repair is for. See Mac data recovery.

Collection and return can be arranged for homes and offices across Fulham and Central London. Ask when you call 020 7237 6805 and we'll confirm what's possible for your postcode. You're also welcome to bring it to the workshop at Willow Walk, SE1, Monday to Saturday.
Is the repair guaranteed?
Yes. Parts we fit and motherboard repairs carry a 90-day warranty. If the same fault comes back in that time, bring the machine in and we'll put it right.
